As we continue to tread the path to the African Esports Championship, VersusNG brings the prestigious event’s qualifiers to Arewa with its Kaduna tournament.

The open FIFA 19 tournament was held at the cosy library and community center, Ilmihouse in Unguwan Rimi, our home away from home. In attendance were eight star players, including the master of mind games, Oluyemi “Yemi2k” Efosa Majekodunmi, and the bane of many, Ahman “Oginji” Ibrahim. The remaining competitors were Abdullahi, Akayinda, BUMB, Laban, Modimudh, and Sule. However, the tournament did not turn out how many had expected.

With an all-expense-paid trip up for grabs, the first-place prize was the chance to represent Kaduna at the AEC Lagos Nationals. Winning at that event would mean moving on to the AEC Finals in Kenya. The Kaduna qualifiers consisted of a Group Stage and Playoff, both of which consisted of single-elimination matches.

Group Stage

In the Group Stage, Yemi2k reigned supreme with no losses in Group 1,  followed by Abdullahi who came second with six points. Meanwhile, Oginji topped Group 2 with Sule following, three points apart.

Playoffs

Seven was clearly the name of the game as Yemi2k earned his third 7-goal win in the tournament after defeating Sule in the Semi-finals. What’s more, Abdullahi knocked the long-running champion, Oginji, down to the 3rd Place match, earning himself a spot in the Finals.

The Finals was a close match with Yemi2k barely able to beat Abdullahi by one goal despite his performance throughout the tournament. VersusNG has a new champion and the AEC Lagos Nationals have a new competitor.
